Joy of Learning

Like never before, we have the freedom to focus purely on the joy of learning!  Powerful learners love to expand, grow, explore, try new things and discover.  Now, there is time for sheer student curiosity to lead the way.

While teachers are distributing learning plans to ‘keep students going,’ I’m more interested in what students want to do with this time.  How will they unlock their own genius?  Also, how can teachers offer intriguing provocations to walk children to these elusive and magical lands?

Wonderland

I’ve been asking, “How can we invite children to fall down the rabbit hole of learning, just like Alice?”

“It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.”  Alice and Wonderland, Lewis Carroll

“Curiouser and curiouser!”  Alice and Wonderland, Lewis Carroll

“‘Who in the world am I?’ Ah, that’s the great puzzle!”  Alice and Wonderland, Lewis Carroll

“Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.”  Lewis Carroll

How will we get to this Wonderland?

Big Commitments

In our learning community, we are committed to the following:

  • JOY of learning! That is in the process, both the struggle, frustration, and achievement.
  • connection to our community. This is important for our students and they are inspired by it.
  • relationship with a professional educator who has an attachment to your child.  This attachment will bridge to the curriculum and situate the learning.
  • fundamental skills of literacy and numeracy.

With those big commitments, everything else is flexible, because our mission is to cultivate powerful learners.

Freedom

Allow me to give you some examples from our home this week.  We made carrot cake instead of play-do, studied oceans instead of rainbows, and learned about multiplication through the game Prime Climb instead of creating array artwork.  While these may seem like simple adjustments, we made them based on our family life, values, our child’s curiosity, and what is sparking the imagination.  Best of all, she really wants a real robot and in the void is making one from a kleenex box.

Truly, I hope parents will feel the freedom to personalize learning like never before.  Free your children to dive deeply into themes of study.  In these days, they can invest time researching, investigating, observing, creating, making, and transforming.

And, for heaven’s sake, if something isn’t working on a particular hour, day, or week, by all means, change it.  In every teacher interview, I’ve ever conducted, I ask the question, “Tell me about a time a lesson bombed and what did you do?”  I’m always listening for the capacity to change it, as soon as possible, because learning can be as wild as Wonderland.

Now, parents, you are ones with that same privilege.  Enter into this creative moment with your child.

Indeed, while school is closed, let’s unlock learning together!

For the sake of the children,

Karine
